If You Have Temporary Implants, Does That Change What You Are Allowed to Eat?

Posted on 2/25/2019 by Palisades Surgical Arts
If You Have Temporary Implants, Does That Change What You Are Allowed to Eat?If you have lost some or all your teeth, you have options about what to do. You can do nothing, you can get dentures, or you can get implants. All these choices mean something different for how your teeth work.

Most people know that if they do nothing to replace lost or broken teeth, they may not be able to eat all the foods they like. They don't always know if that is the case when they get implants.

Temporary Versus Permanent Implants

One of the reasons that people get dental implants is because they act the same way natural teeth do. There are no restrictions on what you eat and you care for the implants in the same way as your natural teeth.

What people don't realize is that you do not get the permanent crowns immediately after you get the implants. The implants take time to heal and the permanent crowns are not put in place until the implants are completely healed. This ensures that the crowns and implants will last a long time.
While the implant is healing it is possible to get a temporary crown.

This crown looks like a natural tooth, but because the implant is still healing and getting stronger, it does not always function like a natural tooth. That means there are some restrictions when you have a temporary crown over the implant in place.

Foods to Avoid
Hard foods can damage the temporary crown and the implant. Acidic foods can create problems of the implant as well. Sticky foods can find a way into the space around the temporary crown and can create issues when you try to get them out of the teeth. Sugary foods could fuel bacteria growth and lead to problems with plaque and infection as the implant heals. Soft drinks contain the sugar and acids that can ruin the temporary crown.
