Following an Automobile Accident, We Should Examine Your Mouth

Following an Automobile Accident, We Should Examine Your MouthAn auto accident is a traumatic experience. There is plenty to worry about. Is anyone hurt, how bad is my car damaged, what do I do next are just a few of the things that go through the mind after an accident. While it is important to eventually deal with all the problems an auto accident creates, there are some things that are a priority.

One of those things is the health of all the people in the accident. It is not always enough to get checked by a paramedic. A trip to the emergency room can also miss some things. That is why it is a good idea to schedule an appointment with our office after you have been in an accident.

What Happens to the Body During an Accident?
Even a minor accident can cause damage to the body. The head and back are at risk because of the sudden stop that occurs during an accident. The sudden stop makes the body move forward and then backward, causing stress on the body.

An auto accident can put stress on the jaw and the muscles of the jaw. Without realizing it, that stress can cause damage that the individual does not feel right away.

Auto Accidents and TMJ

An auto accident can lead to a condition called temporomandibular joint disorder. TNJ can lead to a variety of symptoms that include jaw pain, clicking sounds, difficulty opening or closing the mouth. The problems can range from relatively minor to debilitating. All of this can start when a person is in an auto accident if the jaw and the muscles of the jaw are knocked out of place.

The symptoms of TMJ do not always materialize right after an accident which is why it is a good idea to visit our office after an accident.

The earlier we can treat TMJ, the easier it is to resolve the potential problems. A checkup after an accident is the best way to prevent more serious problems with the jaw from occurring.
