Some Bleeding is Normal After Oral Surgery, But How Much is Some?Although modern dentistry has improved in many ways getting oral surgery done is still a traumatic experience for your teeth and gums. Bleeding can occur during the surgery and may continue after the surgery.

It is normal and in some ways the bleeding plays an important role in the recovery from oral surgery. It is important to understand what the difference between normal bleeding that does not require special treatment or excessive bleeding that is the sign of a bigger problem.

How to Tell How Much Bleeding There Is

In order to know whether you are dealing with an excessive amount of bleeding or a normal amount of bleeding is by figuring out how much blood there is. One way to do this is through the use of gauze placed over the surgical site. The gauze serves two purposes. It can absorb the blood and it can help stop the flow of blood. Keep track of when you put the gauze in place and how quickly it becomes filled with blood to figure out how much bleeding there is.

The Length of Time
The second thing to consider when determining how much bleeding there is and whether it is normal is the length of time that the bleeding goes on for. It is normal for the surgical site to have some blood for a day or two after the surgery, but most of the bleeding should stop soon after the procedure. When you apply the gauze to the surgical site, it should stop the bleeding in less than an hour in most cases.

The amount of blood that you see will depend on different factors. People on blood thinners may experience more blood that others. Take all these things into account when you are trying to figure out if the bleeding you have after oral surgery is normal or if it is a sign of a problem.
