Dental Implants

Your teeth may be small, but they play several critical roles. They enable you to bite and chew your food, which is the essential first stage of digestion. They control the flow of air when you speak, allowing you to form certain words and sounds. Your teeth are an integral part of a beautiful smile. They are also essential for maintaining the strength of your jawbone. Tooth loss has a serious impact on all of these functions, impacting your appearance, your oral health, and your quality of life. At Palisades Surgical Arts, we can help to restore the health and beauty of your mouth with dental implants.

What Dental Implants Are

Dental implants are the latest option for replacing missing teeth and have quickly become the preferred method among both dental professionals and patients alike. They are unlike any other tooth replacement option available. Dental implants consist of three components:
•  The implant. The actual implant is a small titanium rod. This rod is surgically inserted into your jawbone. It relies on a process known as osseointegration, or the fusion of your natural bone to the rod. This fusion turns the implant into a stable root that then provides support for your replacement teeth.
•  Abutment. The abutment is the connector. It is placed on the top of the implants and connects your replacement teeth to the titanium rod.
•  The crown. The crown is your replacement tooth. It is made from ceramic. This material is used because it is fairly strong, and it can mimic many of the properties of your natural enamel, including coloration and light reflection.

Types of Dental Implants

Dental implants are highly versatile and can be used to replace any number of missing teeth, from one to all. There are several different types of dental implants to suit a variety of needs:
•  Single tooth implants. One titanium rod is placed that supports a single crown.
•  Multiple tooth implants. A multiple tooth implant, also called an implant supported bridge, is used to replace two or more consecutive missing teeth. It is used instead of a bridge or partial denture. One or more dental implants are inserted into the jawbone to support your replacement teeth.
•  Implant supported a denture. An implant supported denture is used to replace an entire arch of missing teeth, providing an alternative to traditional dentures. 6 to 8 implants are used to support your replacement teeth.
•  All-on-4®. The All-on-4® treatment concept is used to provide an implant supported denture to those who have suffered too much bone loss to support 6 to 8 implants. Instead, the denture is supported on four implants that are strategically placed.

Dental Implant Procedure

We then create incisions in your gums, exposing the bone underneath. Holes are drilled into the bone, and the implants are placed. Your gums are then sutured closed around the implants, leaving some of the titanium exposed above the tissue. Temporary teeth are secured in place and you are sent home to heal. Healing can take several weeks to several months (depending on the number of implants). Once you have fully healed, we then create and place your permanent replacement teeth.
