Your Oral Surgeon Can Often Help with Sleep Apnea Issues

Posted on 8/30/2018 by Palisades Surgical Arts
Your Oral Surgeon Can Often Help with Sleep Apnea IssuesAccording to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons association (OMS), an estimated 18 to 20-million adults in the United States suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

A serious condition that presents several risks, including heart attack, stroke, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, heart disease, and decreased libido. When left untreated, OSA can result in drowsiness during waking hours that can affect alertness.

Why is Sleep Apnea Dangerous?

One of the most serious problems with sleep apnea is that breathing can be interrupted. The OMS defines sleep apnea when 30 or more apneas occur during a seven-hour period. These episodes can last for 60 to 90-seconds, 500-times each night and they happen when the upper airway is blocked by excess tissue; or enlarged tongue or tonsils.

When you stop breathing because of these issues, the body sends a signal to the brain that wakes you and restarts normal breathing.

Treatments for Sleep Apnea

While surgery is an option for some patients, it's not always the best solution to OSA and there are behavior changes, oral devices, or air pressure appliances such a CPAP, that can be used to treat the condition. Every patient is different, and the treatment will depend on the severity of the sleep apnea. It is important to consider all the information available before proceeding with surgical solutions.

People who suffer from OSA are not only at risk of getting into a car accident, but they can be affected by low productivity and lack of energy during the day, which can lead to personal problems.

Your oral surgeon can often help with sleep apnea issues, but you must let us know of your condition and give us as much information as possible about your symptoms. If you have a sleep partner, they can provide invaluable details to our team, so bring them with you to your consultation.
