How Our Oral Surgeons Can Help Treat Sleep ApneaThere are plenty of people that suffer from sleep apnea that do not even know it happens. The reason for this is simple. It happens while a person sleeps and it is easy to ignore some of the symptoms of sleep apnea. The problem is that sleep apnea is a dangerous condition that is treatable. For some, a solution to sleep apnea is found through oral surgery.

The Types of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is when you stop breathing for 10 seconds or more during sleep. There are three types of sleep apnea; obstructive, central and mixed. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway becomes blocked. This can occur when the upper and lower jaw shift in such a way that the airway becomes blocked.

It can also happen when the tongue slides back in the mouth and blocks the airway. Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain does not send the signal to breath and mixed sleep apnea is a combination of obstructive and central.

Treatment Through Surgery

There are several ways to treat obstructive sleep apnea. Dental appliances can help, but you need to wear them every time you sleep for them to be effective. A second solution is to turn to an oral surgeon. The surgery depends on the cause of the obstructive sleep apnea.

If it comes from the tongue shifting backwards, the oral surgeon can remove some of the soft palate tissue or uvula to help prevent anything from blocking the airway. There is also a surgical procedure that brings the upper and lower jaws forward. It can also include moving the tongue forward, which can prevent them from blocking the airway.

Sleep apnea is very common. It is also very dangerous. The idea of living with it for the rest your life is not very appealing. That is why surgery may offer a better solution.
