Could a Custom Mouthguard Help Protect Your Teeth?

Posted on 2/15/2020 by Palisades Surgical Arts
Could a Custom Mouthguard Help Protect Your Teeth? It has long been said that protection is better than cure. When it comes to the face and mouth, this statement is very true. They are used for people who are involved in a contact sport or other recreational activities that might cause injuries or if you tend to grind your teeth when you are asleep.

If you continually grind your teeth when sleeping, you run a risk of experiencing wear and tear to the teeth, which can significantly increase the chance of losing the tooth or a fracture. Basically, the mouthguard is designed to protect your tongue, gums, lips, face, jaw, and teeth from injury. However, mouth guards come in many forms. You can either get yourself an over the counter mouthguard or a custom made one.

Custom Made Mouthguards

These mouth guards, unlike their opponents, are specially made for a single individual. Over the counter, mouthguards are created from a mold that's designed to fit the greatest number of people and produced in mass for the best profitability. With custom made ones, the dentist will make them depending on the use.

Before making the mouthguard, the oral physician will take a mold of your mouth so that they can make an exact replica of your mouth for the perfect fit. Since the mouthguards are made of thermoplastic material, they are both strong and can be rectified in case the fit isn't right. The idea here is to create a condition where there is minimum movement as possible in the mouth, which is safer and with less likelihood of an injury.

Benefits Of Custom Mouthguards

Instead of getting a one-size-fits-all guard, the custom option gives you the perfect snug. Whets more, the mouth guards can vary in thickness depending on how severe the tooth grinding is. Since the mouthguard is made from a mold of your mouth, the jaw muscles will be more naturally positioned, thus eliminating any jaw strain and providing a long-term solution to your problems. Additionally, you get better protection in case you are a sports player. This way, you are less likely to suffer concussions

It's important to stay safe in whatever we are doing. If you think you need a custom mouthguard, it's time to get it as soon as possible. As soon as you come in, we can talk and then take your measurements for your new custom mouth guards!
