Do You Need Your Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Posted on 2/29/2020 by Palisades Surgical Arts
Do You Need Your Wisdom Teeth Removed? For many people, emerging wisdom teeth can be a significant coming-of-age ordeal. Though usually erupting towards the later half of adolescence, they can also choose to break free as adults. Depending on how the wisdom teeth are sitting in your mouth, there can be one of two options: leave them alone or remove them.

Fortunately for some, it can be a good thing to know that just because you have wisdom teeth, you do not necessarily have to have them removed. Much of this is determined by the health of your mouth and whether or not the teeth are causing you issues.

When Wisdom Teeth Need To Be Extracted

During your first exam, there is a good chance you will receive an x-ray to determine the overall health of your mouth. If we discover you have wisdom teeth, we can check to see how well they are coming in and whether or not they could cause you problems in the future.

If we notice there is a risk of impaction or issues to the surrounding teeth, there is a good chance they will need to be removed. If you are in pain and we discover it is due to your wisdom teeth causing irritation, this is another reason we may need to extract them.

When Your Wisdom Teeth Can Stay

Not all teeth need to be removed just because they are extra and not part of the standard set. If we can see that there are no problems and are not causing you any irritation, then there is no reason to take them out. We will check to make certain, but if we detect no potential for issues, then you should be able to keep your wisdom teeth.

If you are feeling any discomfort or are aware of molars coming out that you did not have before, we would be happy to check it for you. Just make an appointment with us and we can decide whether your wisdom teeth can stay or if they need to go.
