How Does a Sinus Lift Procedure Help with Dental Implants

How Does a Sinus Lift Procedure Help with Dental ImplantsSome patients who choose to have dental implants run into an issue regarding the lack of bone mass in their upper jaw. This augmentation process adds bone mass to the jaw so the dental implants can be correctly placed and have enough support to sustain them. A huge step in dental technology this procedure allows patients to get dental plans when before they would have been unable due to the lack of stable bone mass. They would have had to put up with the traditional denture route and suffer slipping plates and eating a restricted diet.

What is Involved in a Sinus Lift Procedure?

Above the upper jaw are the sinus cavities which are essentially air pockets in the face. The roots of the upper teeth extend into this space. Removing these teeth leaves just a thin bit of bone, which many times is not enough to support a dental implant because they are imbedded into the jaw's bone structure. A sinus lift helps new bone development by moving the sinus floor. Where bone grafting is concerned, this has become a common dental surgical procedure.

Any patient missing one or more teeth or have bone mass issues which would keep them from a dental implant procedure would be helped by a sinus lift. Whether bone loss is congenital or is the result of poor oral hygiene, neither precludes them from the surgery.

During the procedure, the jawbone needs to be exposed by making an incision in the molar area. After making another small incision into the sinus, the soft tissue is raised, and the resulting space is filled with a bone graft. Once the graft is in place, the incisions are closed, and the patient's body begins to start rebuilding the bone.
