Gum Grafting

Periodontal Therapy

When many people think of oral health and a beautiful smile, it is often the condition of the teeth that come to mind. While the condition of your teeth is important, so, too, is the condition of your gums. Your gums play a vital role in both your oral health and the aesthetics of your smile. Healthy gum tissue sits snugly against the necks of your teeth, providing an effective seal against bacteria and other debris. Gum recession can have a serious impact on both your oral health and the beauty of your smile. At Palisades Surgical Arts, we can restore recessed gum tissue with a gum graft.

What causes gum recession?

There are numerous causes of gum recession, including:
•  Gum disease. Gum disease is one of the leading causes of gum recession. When bacteria attack your gums, they become inflamed. Inflamed tissue pulls away from the teeth, and eventually dies off, causing it to recede. The worse gum disease becomes, the more recession you face.
•  Aggressive brushing, which wears away the gum tissue.
•  Bruxism, or the clenching and grinding of your teeth.
•  Smoking, or using other tobacco products.
•  Your age. As you age, your gums naturally recede.

A gum graft is a procedure designed to restore lost gum tissue, effectively giving you back your oral health, your smile, and your quality of life.

A gum graft is a surgical procedure that replaces missing gum tissue. In many cases, this involves the use of tissue from elsewhere inside your mouth (usually the roof), although tissue from a donor, or even regenerative materials, may be used. Before we begin surgery, a local anesthetic is administered at the surgical sites. If necessary, we can also provide sedation. We then harvest the donor tissue from the donor site and suture it over the areas of recession. As you heal, your natural tissue and the donor tissue fuse together, and reform the protective seal around the necks of your teeth.

Different Types of Gum Graft

There are several different types of gum grafts:
•  Connective tissue graft. A connective tissue graft harvests tissue from under a small flap created at the roof of your mouth. This particular graft is ideal for covering over exposed roots.
•  Free gingival graft. This type of graft also takes tissue from the roof of your mouth. However, the tissue is taken directly from the roof, rather than from under a flap, creating a more open wound. This particular graft is ideal when harder (keratinized) tissue is needed.
•  Pedicle graft. A pedicle graft uses the existing gum tissue surrounding the areas of recession. We make strategic incisions, enabling the tissue to maintain blood flow. We then rearrange the tissue over the areas of recession and secure it in place. Because the blood vessels are left intact, healing can start faster.

Benefits of Gum Grafting

Gum grafting has several benefits:
•  Your oral health is improved. A restored gum line, snug against your teeth, can return to protecting the roots of your teeth and your jawbone from bacterial invasion.
•  Tooth sensitivity is eliminated.
•  With a natural gum line restored, the quality of your smile is restored. This can also help to provide you with more confidence, and the desire to smile as often as possible.

Gum grafting can help to restore the health of your gums and give you back your beautiful, confident smile. Call Palisades Surgical Arts at (424) 346-0955 to schedule your consultation today.
